In mid-March 2020, I came across some critical comments on the Ravelry page for my Everyday Face Mask pattern. The timing coincided with growing concerns about Covid-19, and several commenters raised questions about the pattern’s safety.
About This Pattern
This pattern was created long before the pandemic. I designed it in 2010 as an anniversary gift for my husband, and didn’t publish it until 2017. It was born out of a very practical, everyday need as a motorcycle rider — protecting against road dust, heat, and cold air, while helping me avoid touching my face without having to wear a disposable surgical mask.
What It’s Actually For
This mask functions like a scarf, balaclava, or cowl. Its purpose is comfort and aesthetics, not medical protection. “This mask is more to cover your face from dust, sun, cold weather or to cover your face without any particular medical reason.”
On Covid-19
Following WHO recommendations: the most effective ways to protect yourself from Covid-19 are to wash your hands frequently, cover coughs with your elbow or a tissue, and keep at least 1 metre of distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
My own precautions: hand sanitizer, regular handwashing, vitamin supplements, and only leaving the house for essentials.
Fabric masks are required in my area, and I fully support knitters and crafters who are making masks for themselves and others. The most important thing is to think carefully about function and fit when you make them.
Stay safe, and please remember to keep the tone kind in online spaces.
Happy Knitting!!
